Upstart Holdings (NASDAQ:UPST) recently experienced a notable downturn in its stock market performance, with shares falling sharply after the company announced its first-quarter financial results. The artificial intelligence lending platform reported a net loss that expanded considerably compared to the previous year, alongside revenue figures that did not meet market expectations.
According to Seeking Alpha, the company disclosed a net loss of $25.2 million for the quarter ending March 31, 2024. This figure represents a significant increase from the $12.9 million loss recorded in the same period last year. Concurrently, total revenue for the quarter reached $128 million, falling short of the $135 million consensus estimate from financial analysts.
The diluted earnings per share also reflected this challenging period, coming in at -$0.29. This contrasted with analyst predictions of -$0.13 per share, further contributing to the negative sentiment surrounding the stock. Despite these disappointing figures, there were some positive aspects within the report.
Upstart noted an increase in its fee revenue, which climbed to $127 million from $113 million year-over-year. The number of loans transacted through its platform also saw a healthy rise, reaching 133,000, up from 127,000 in the corresponding quarter last year. The total dollar volume of these loans also increased, from $1.1 billion to $1.2 billion.
However, the company's guidance for the second quarter did not provide significant encouragement to investors. Upstart projects second-quarter revenue to be approximately $125 million, which is below the analyst consensus of $140 million. Net income is anticipated to be a loss of $35 million, with diluted earnings per share expected to be a loss of $0.44.
These forward-looking statements contributed to the continued pressure on the stock. The broader economic environment and its impact on consumer lending, especially for a platform that utilizes AI for risk assessment, are closely watched by investors. The market's reaction underscores the importance of meeting increasingly stringent financial forecasts in the current climate.
