The primary equity benchmark in Russia registered a substantial decrease at the close of trading on Thursday. According to Investing.com, the MOEX Russia Index, which tracks the performance of the largest and most liquid Russian companies, fell by 2.68% by the end of the session. The decline marked a challenging day for investors in Moscow, with broad-based losses across various sectors. The weakness in the market was evident as the index settled at 3,365.17 points, down from its opening level. Several key industries contributed to the overall negative performance. Notably, the mining sector faced considerable pressure, alongside oil and gas companies, and the manufacturing industry. These segments are typically significant drivers of the Russian economy and their underperformance weighed heavily on market sentiment. Among the specific components of the MOEX Russia Index, several companies recorded significant drops. Shares of Polyus, a major gold producer, saw a notable decrease. Similarly, Novatek, one of Russia's largest independent natural gas producers, experienced a considerable fall in its stock value. Other companies also felt the impact of the broader market correction. Magnit, a leading retail chain, and Lukoil, a major oil company, were among those whose stock prices moved downwards during the trading day. The day's trading activity showed more stocks declining than advancing on the Moscow Exchange. A total of 188 equities posted losses, while only 53 saw gains, and 12 remained unchanged. This imbalance further underscored the bearish mood prevalent in the market. Investors are likely assessing various factors influencing the market, including global commodity prices and domestic economic indicators. The considerable drop in a single trading session suggests a degree of investor caution or a reaction to prevailing market conditions.
