The Russian stock market concluded its trading session with a decline, as the primary benchmark, the MOEX Russia Index, fell by 0.71%. This downward movement saw the index settle at 3,218.66 points by the close of business.
According to an Investing.com report, the various sectors within the Russian market displayed mixed performance, though the overall trend pointed towards a contraction. Notably, the oil and gas sector, along with the mining and manufacturing industries, contributed significantly to the index's fall. Conversely, some areas of the market, such as telecommunications, showed marginal resilience amidst the general downturn.
Among the individual stocks that saw significant declines, PJSC Lukoil experienced a reduction of 2.14%, closing at 7,204.00. Another notable mover, Sberbank of Russia, fell by 0.96% to finish the day at 290.72. Gazprom, a major energy player, also contributed to the market's negative trajectory, dropping by 0.42% to 171.10. These movements amongst major corporations underscore the pressure faced by the market during this trading period.
Despite the prevailing downward trend, a few companies managed to buck the trend and record gains. Sistema PJSFC, for instance, saw its shares rise by 1.63%, closing at 21.80. X5 Retail Group also posted a positive change, increasing by 0.98% to 2,058.00. Polymetal International PLC registered a modest uplift of 0.81%, ending the day at 285.50. These isolated increases, however, were not sufficient to counteract the broader market's decline.
The overall trading volume on the Moscow Exchange indicated a moderately active session. Investors reacted to a variety of factors, including commodity price fluctuations and global economic sentiment. The ruble remained relatively stable against major international currencies during the session, with the USD/RUB pair edging up by 0.05% to 92.56, while the EUR/RUB pair saw a similar minimal increase of 0.04% reaching 100.12. This currency stability, however, did not translate into an uplift for the equity market, which ultimately settled lower.
