The eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality is moving forward with significant investments in its water infrastructure, according to AllAfrica Top. These comprehensive undertakings are designed to enhance the reliability of water delivery and strengthen the overall water security for residents across the metropolitan area.
Several key projects form part of this extensive upgrade. One notable initiative involves the construction of a new pipeline, spanning 10.4 kilometers, intended to link the Wiggins Umkhumbane reservoir directly to the NW5 and NW6 reservoirs. This connection is projected to introduce an additional 50 million liters of water capacity daily into the system, significantly boosting available resources.
Another crucial development is the construction of a substantial 50-megaliter reservoir. This new facility is being built in close proximity to the existing NW5 and NW6 reservoirs, further augmenting the region's water storage capabilities and contributing to a more consistent supply.
The municipality is also focusing on upgrading and expanding its purification infrastructure. The Umgeni raw water aqueduct, which transports raw water for treatment, is undergoing enhancements at its purification works. This upgrade is anticipated to deliver an additional 20 million liters of purified water each day, supporting the growing demands of the population.
These strategic infrastructure projects are not only about increasing capacity but also about improving the resilience and efficiency of the entire water supply network. The municipality's proactive approach aims to address current challenges and prepare for future water needs, ensuring that communities have consistent access to safe and clean water. The investment underscores a commitment to long-term sustainable water management and improved public services.
