Italian energy major Eni has reported a significant natural gas discovery through its operated Kwang-Kwang exploration well, situated in the North Ganal production sharing contract area offshore Indonesia. This new find, located approximately 60 kilometers north of the major Jangkrik Floating Production Unit (FPU), demonstrates flow rates that Eni has characterized as exceptional, according to Seeking Alpha.
The specific testing conducted on the Kwang-Kwang well involved a drill stem test that achieved a capacity of 80–100 million standard cubic feet per day (MMscf/d) of gas, alongside 800–1,000 barrels per day (bbl/d) of condensate. These figures are indicative of a high-yield reservoir, suggesting a robust natural gas and associated liquids resource.
The Kwang-Kwang well is strategically positioned near the existing Jangkrik and Merakes facilities, which could facilitate expedited development and production should the discovery prove commercially viable. The proximity to established infrastructure often reduces the time and capital expenditure required to bring new discoveries online, making this find particularly attractive.
Eni operates the North Ganal PSC with an 85% participating interest, while its partner, PT Pertamina Hulu Energi, holds the remaining 15%. This partnership underscores a collaborative effort in exploring and developing Indonesia's significant offshore energy resources. The Italian energy firm has a long-standing presence in Indonesia, actively engaged in exploration and production activities across several key basins.
This recent success follows Eni's previous discoveries in the area, reinforcing the geological prospectivity of the region and the company's effective exploration strategies. The company aims to leverage its operational expertise and existing infrastructure to quickly assess the full potential of the Kwang-Kwang discovery and integrate it into its broader production portfolio. The positive test results are a crucial step in evaluating the commercial viability and development pathway for this new gas field, which could contribute significantly to Indonesia's energy supply and Eni's global production targets.
