Argo Group Holdings, Ltd. announced its financial performance for the first quarter, noting an uptick in gross written premiums. Despite this increase, the Bermuda-based specialty insurer reported an underwriting loss for the period.
According to Seeking Alpha, the company registered $770.8 million in gross written premiums during the first three months of the year, marking an 8.6% rise compared to the same quarter in the previous year. Net earned premiums also saw an increase, reaching $460.1 million, up from $414.9 million year-over-year.
The insurer’s combined ratio, a key measure of profitability in the insurance industry, stood at 103.8% for the quarter. This figure indicates that for every dollar of premium collected, the company paid out $1.038 in claims and expenses. This contrasts with the 98.7% combined ratio reported in the corresponding quarter last year.
The underwriting loss for the quarter amounted to $17.6 million. This marks a shift from the underwriting income of $5.6 million that Argo Group recorded in the first quarter of the prior year. Catastrophe losses significantly impacted these results, contributing $42.5 million to the total, considerably higher than the $11.7 million in catastrophe losses experienced during the first quarter of the previous year.
Investment income provided a positive contribution, with net investment income reaching $51.7 million, an improvement from $46.9 million in the first quarter of the prior year. The company recorded a net loss of $2.4 million for the quarter, or $0.07 per diluted share. This compares to a net income of $26.8 million, or $0.77 per diluted share, in the same period last year.
Core underwriting income, which excludes certain non-recurring items, was reported at an underwriting loss of $18.6 million. This is a decline from the core underwriting income of $15.5 million in the first quarter of the preceding year. Operating income, a measure of profit from regular business activities, also saw a decrease, moving from $21.5 million in the prior year’s first quarter to an operating loss of $7.8 million this quarter. Adjusted operating income per diluted share was a loss of $0.09, compared to a gain of $0.62 in the prior year.
