The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has announced an uncommon mid-year increase to the standard mileage deduction rates, effective for the latter half of 2024. This adjustment impacts the cost of operating an automobile for business, medical, or moving purposes. Beginning July 1, 2024, the new rate for business use of a vehicle will be 69.5 cents per mile, marking an increase from the previous 67 cents per mile set at the start of the year. This represents a 2.5-cent rise in the deduction. According to Yahoo Finance, such a mid-year modification is not typical but reflects evolving economic conditions, particularly fluctuating fuel costs. Medical and moving expense deductions will also see a bump, rising to 22 cents per mile from 21 cents. This specific change applies to qualified moving expenses for active-duty military personnel, as well as general medical travel. The rate for charitable organizations, however, remains unchanged at 14 cents per mile, as this figure is statutorily set by Congress and is not subject to IRS administrative adjustments. This marks the first time since 2022 that the IRS has modified its mileage rates in the middle of a tax year. The agency bases these rates on an annual study of the fixed and variable costs associated with operating a vehicle. Variable costs, such as gasoline, maintenance, and tires, along with fixed costs like insurance and depreciation, are factored into the calculation. Significant shifts in these underlying costs can prompt an interim review and adjustment. For taxpayers, the decision to use the standard mileage rate or to deduct actual expenses for their vehicle use is an important one. Businesses and self-employed individuals often benefit from using the standard rate as it simplifies record-keeping. However, those with higher actual expenses, including significant maintenance or depreciation, may find itemizing more advantageous. This revised rate will be applicable for all eligible travel conducted between July 1 and December 31, 2024. Taxpayers will report these deductions when filing their 2024 tax returns in early 2025. It is crucial for individuals and businesses to maintain accurate records of their mileage to ensure they claim the correct deductions.
