A new Indonesian horror film, "Korean Haunted Hospital," is preparing for its inaugural showing on the global stage. The 30th Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival, known as BiFan, has selected the picture for its world premiere. Audiences will experience the feature within the festival's distinctive Signature segment, as reported by Variety.
This cinematic offering comes from the collaborative efforts of MD Pictures and Umbara Brothers Film. Directorial duties were undertaken by Anggy Umbara, working from a screenplay crafted by Lele Laila. The movie itself is a reimagining of a popular South Korean web series that first captivated audiences online.
The original web series, which gathered a significant following, centered on a narrative involving five young individuals. Their ill-fated decision to visit a forsaken psychiatric facility, rumored to be haunted, forms the core of the story. The facility, supposedly the site of horrific medical malpractice resulting in patient fatalities, provides a grim backdrop for the unfolding events.
This Indonesian adaptation is not the first time the web series has inspired a feature film. A South Korean cinematic version was released in 2018, which went on to achieve impressive box office success, earning approximately $20 million internationally. That earlier film focused on a different group of young people investigating the mysteries of the same eerie hospital setting.
In related news, MD Pictures has also revealed forthcoming projects including "Do You See What I See" and "Jurnal Risa The Movie." The latter is based on a popular book series written by Risa Saraswati. These upcoming films demonstrate a broader trend in Indonesian cinema, with a notable emphasis on horror and supernatural themes captivating audiences both domestically and abroad. The selection of "Korean Haunted Hospital" for such a prestigious international festival underscores the growing global appeal of Indonesian genre filmmaking.
