Apple has agreed to disburse funds to some iPhone purchasers in the United States to resolve a class-action lawsuit. This agreement, which could see payouts reach up to $95 per individual, stems from allegations that the company's promotional material for its AI features was misleading. According to BBC Business, the legal challenge, initiated last year, contended that Apple's promotion of "Apple Intelligence" led consumers to believe their devices possessed more advanced artificial intelligence functionalities than they actually did. The plaintiffs argued that this marketing strategy influenced their purchasing decisions. While the specific details of the complaint weren't elaborated upon, it generally focused on the discrepancy between advertised features and actual product capabilities. The settlement fund is reportedly set at a minimum of $27 million, with a potential increase to $35 million depending on the number of claims approved. This financial arrangement aims to provide restitution to eligible customers who bought certain iPhone models during a defined period. The proposed payout amount of up to $95 per claimant reflects the estimated impact of the alleged misrepresentation on consumer value. Eligibility for these payments is expected to apply to American consumers who acquired an iPhone 6s, 6s Plus, 7, 7 Plus, or SE (first generation) and updated to iOS 11 or later, or an iPhone 8, 8 Plus, or X and updated to iOS 12 or later. The exact timeframe for these purchases and software updates would be specified in the official settlement details. Individuals who meet these criteria will likely need to submit a claim to receive their portion of the settlement. Apple has not publicly admitted any wrongdoing as part of this settlement, a common practice in such legal resolutions. Instead, the agreement represents a practical step to conclude the litigation without ongoing court proceedings. The company has historically faced scrutiny over various aspects of its business practices, and this latest development adds to that history, emphasizing the importance of clear and accurate product messaging, particularly in the rapidly evolving field of artificial intelligence.
