Moscow equities ended trading on a subdued note, with the principal MOEX Russia Index declining by nearly half a percent. This downward movement was observed as the market closed, indicating a generally weaker session for investors.
According to Investing.com, prominent sectors such as mining, manufacturing, and oil and gas contributed significantly to the overall market's retreat. The financial results from these large industrial segments often heavily influence the broader index’s performance.
Among the companies experiencing notable declines, United Company Rusal, a major aluminum producer, saw its shares drop by 1.63%. Another significant faller was Novolipetsk Steel, a steel giant, which recorded a decrease of 1.54%. Additionally, Surgutneftegas, a key player in the oil and gas industry, witnessed a share price reduction of 1.40%.
Conversely, some firms managed to defy the prevailing negative sentiment and posted gains. Obuv Rossii, a footwear retailer, registered an impressive rise of 3.03%. PJSC Magnit, a leading retail chain, also experienced an uptick, with its stock price advancing by 2.05%. Pharmaceutical company Pharmstandard climbed by 1.57%, showcasing resilience amid the market's general decline.
The volume of trading activity on the Moscow Exchange was also tracked. Advancing issues outnumbered those that declined by a ratio of 126 to 91, while 17 stocks remained unchanged. This suggests that while the index overall fell, there was a mixed performance among individual companies.
The Russian ruble showed slight depreciation against the US dollar, trading down by 0.10% to 92.48. Against the Euro, the ruble also weakened, falling by 0.28% to reach 100.86. Fluctuations in the national currency can sometimes reflect or influence investor confidence in the equity market.
Commodity markets also played a role. Gold futures for December delivery increased by 0.08%, reaching $1,947.50 per troy ounce. Crude oil futures for November delivery rose by 0.44% to $90.57 a barrel, and Brent oil futures for December also saw an increase of 0.42% to $93.84 a barrel. These commodity price movements can impact the revenue outlook for Russian companies, particularly those in the energy and mining sectors.
