Jeff Shell, the former head of Paramount Skydance, has come to terms with a gambler named R.J. Cipriani to bring an end to their legal disagreement, Variety reports. Cipriani had alleged that Shell provided confidential company information and sought a payment in the amount of $150 million for crisis public relations work that was not officially documented. Cipriani initiated legal proceedings against Shell, his spouse, the media conglomerate Paramount, Larry and David Ellison, and several other individuals and entities in March. He contended that millions of dollars were owed to him. The gambler’s claim stemmed from purported efforts to manage public relations for Shell amid damaging articles appearing in the Wall Street Journal and the Hollywood Reporter about the executive at the end of 2022 and the start of 2023. These articles detailed an alleged affair involving Shell and a CNBC correspondent, Hadley Gamble. Shell had previously described Cipriani’s claims as an attempt to extort money. Cipriani’s lawsuit detailed that he received regular payments from Shell, totaling $600,000 between October 2022 and March 2023, for his PR services. Cipriani also asserted that he had been asked to look into the backgrounds of certain journalists and individuals connected to the public exposure of the alleged affair. During this period, Cipriani stated that he traveled to the United Arab Emirates and other locations to conduct this research. Legal documents filed by Cipriani’s legal team include an email from Shell's former attorney, which purportedly confirms Cipriani's engagement to counteract negative media coverage. The attorney reportedly stated in the email that Shell had paid Cipriani a substantial amount for his assistance. Shell was ultimately dismissed from his position at Paramount Global in April due to allegations of inappropriate behavior and a failure to disclose a relationship with a company employee. The specific details of the settlement between Shell and Cipriani were not publicly disclosed. This resolution effectively concludes the litigation that had brought into public view various accusations and claims surrounding the former executive's personal and professional conduct. The original lawsuit by Cipriani had also named Creative Artists Agency and NBCUniversal among the defendants.
