Moscow markets experienced a downturn at the close of trading on Tuesday, with a number of prominent company shares seeing reductions in value. Despite this, the MOEX Russia Index, which serves as a key indicator for the nation's stock performance, registered no significant change throughout the day's trading session.
According to an Investing.com report, the financial sector observed a notable decline, alongside the mining and metallurgy industries, which also faced downward pressure. Conversely, the power and oil and gas sectors showed resilience, posting gains by the market's close.
The overall negative trend among individual stocks was evidenced by the fact that 58 companies experienced a fall in their share price, while only 30 saw an increase, and 10 remained unchanged on the Moscow Exchange. This disparity highlights a general bearish mood affecting a majority of listed firms.
Among the top performers, Krasn Alum gained 2.11% to reach 37.95, and United Co Rusal International PJSC climbed 2.05% to stand at 42.82. Surgutneftegas Pref also saw a positive movement, increasing by 1.63% to close at 48.00.
Conversely, Polymetal International PLC led the decliners, shedding 3.49% to finish at 303.45. TCS Group Holding PLC also had a difficult session, dropping 2.65% to 3,500.00, and Yandex NV decreased by 2.21% to settle at 2,698.00. These significant drops in major companies contributed to the overall negative sentiment observed in the market.
The volume of trading activity saw 998.40 million shares change hands, totaling 44.82 billion Russian Rubles. This indicates a relatively active day for investors despite the mixed results. The market also saw 13,000 contracts for the Russian Ruble futures, valued at 180.12 million, and a total of 97,000 gold futures contracts traded, amounting to 42.06 billion.
