Stocks in Russia finished lower at the close of trading on Tuesday, with the MOEX Russia Index experiencing a considerable fall. This performance reflects a challenging session for the nation's equity markets.
According to Investing.com, the MOEX Russia Index recorded a substantial decline of 3.63% by the end of the trading day. This movement contributed to an overall negative trend observed across various sectors within the market.
Contributing to the downward pressure were several key financial indicators. Among the most significant decliners were companies in the Mining, Manufacturing, and Power sectors. These industries often serve as bellwethers for the broader economic health and faced particular headwinds during this trading period.
Within the MOEX Russia Index constituents, prominent companies saw their share prices drop. For example, Polymetal International plummeted by 7.04%, closing at 292.00. Novatek also experienced a notable loss, falling by 5.37% to settle at 1,173.30. Sberbank Rossii PA registered a decrease of 3.97%, ending the day at 285.50.
Other significant movements included Lukoil, which declined by 3.64% to 7,160.00, and Gazprom Neft, which saw its value drop by 3.39% to 740.00. Surgutneftegas Pref was down 3.09%, closing at 48.75. Magnit PA shares fell 3.08% to 7,490.50, and Rosneft Oil Company decreased by 2.97% to 563.85.
In contrast to the broader market, a small number of stocks managed to post gains. Ros Agro PLC bucked the trend with an increase of 0.81%, reaching 1,114.00. Mobile TeleSystems PJSC gained 0.35%, closing at 284.00, and Severstal PA advanced by 0.20%, ending at 1,607.40. However, these positive movements were insufficient to offset the widespread declines.
The overall trading volume on the Moscow Exchange was robust. Falling stocks outnumbered rising ones by a significant margin, with 179 declining compared to just 32 advancing, while 13 remained unchanged. This imbalance underscores the pervasive negative sentiment that characterized the trading session.
The Russian Ruble also showed weakness against other major currencies. The USD/RUB pair rose by 0.38% to 92.51, indicating a strengthening dollar against the ruble. Similarly, the EUR/RUB pair increased by 0.26%, reaching 100.28. These currency movements further illustrate the financial pressures observed in the Russian market.
