Lisbon’s primary stock market indicator, the PSI 20, recorded a modest decrease by the time markets closed. This movement was primarily driven by a mixed showing among Portugal’s constituent companies, impacting the overall market sentiment. According to Investing.com, the financial and public utility sectors were among those exhibiting losses, contributing to the index’s downward trend.
Several companies within the PSI 20 saw their share prices fall. Among them, Ibersol SGPS, Corticeira Amorim, and Jeronimo Martins all registered declines in their stock valuations. These individual decreases collectively weighed on the broader index, mirroring a day of cautious trading.
Conversely, not all companies experienced a negative day. Altri, The Navigator Company, and CTT Correios de Portugal bucked the trend by posting gains in their share prices. These positive performances, however, were not enough to offset the more widespread downturn.
Currency markets also reflected a degree of volatility. The euro appreciated against the U.S. dollar, with the exchange rate moving to 1.07 U.S. dollars per euro. In contrast, the euro slightly weakened when traded against the British pound, reaching 0.85 British pounds per euro.
Commodity markets presented a mixed picture as well. Crude oil futures for June delivery saw a decrease, settling at around 78.50 U.S. dollars per barrel. Conversely, Brent crude for July delivery experienced a slight increase, trading near 83.20 U.S. dollars per barrel. Gold futures, set for June delivery, also rose, reaching approximately 2,331 U.S. dollars per troy ounce.
