Cotton futures experienced a slight rally during Wednesday's trading, moving away from the day's session lows, though the overall trend remained downward. This rebound provided some relief after earlier declines had pushed prices to their bottom for the day. According to Yahoo Finance, the most active December cotton contract on the Intercontinental Exchange (ICE) saw a modest gain of 19 points, trading at 82.26 cents per pound around midday. Earlier in the session, this contract had dipped to a low of 81.65 cents, before finding some buying interest that helped pare losses. The gains in the December contract were echoed by the March 2024 contract, which also saw a 16-point increase, reaching 82.47 cents per pound. However, other contracts, such as the May 2024 and July 2024 futures, posted minor losses, declining by 5 and 3 points respectively. The full scope of contracts for the 2023-2024 and 2024-2025 crop years generally showed minimal movement, staying within a narrow range from an 8-point loss to a 10-point gain. Contributing to the earlier weakness was a technical sell signal. A key moving average, the 50-day moving average, crossed below the 100-day moving average, a pattern often interpreted by traders as an indicator of potential further downside. Additionally, a slight increase in the U.S. dollar acted as a headwind for cotton prices, as a stronger dollar typically makes dollar-denominated commodities more expensive for international buyers. Despite the midday recovery, speculative long positions, or bets on higher prices, continued to be unwound. This suggests that some market participants are reducing their exposure to cotton, possibly due to concerns about the demand outlook or the overall economic climate.
