Nike achieved a return to profitability in its fiscal fourth quarter, a turnaround significantly aided by a substantial one-time tariff repayment. The athletic footwear and apparel giant announced net income attributable to shareholders of $1.5 billion, or 93 cents per share, for the period ending May 31. This positive financial result contrasts sharply with the loss recorded in the same quarter of the previous year.
According to Yahoo Finance, the robust quarterly performance was primarily propelled by a $921 million reimbursement related to tariffs. This influx of funds helped offset ongoing challenges in key international markets, particularly in Greater China, where sales experienced a notable decline.
Despite the overall positive earnings per share, certain parts of Nike's business faced headwinds. Revenues did not meet analyst expectations, reaching $12.83 billion against a predicted $12.91 billion. This slight shortfall suggests that organic growth remains a focus area for the company.
The sports apparel firm’s challenges were most pronounced in China. Sales in the Greater China region saw a significant drop of 24% on a currency-neutral basis, falling to $1.86 billion. This marks the third consecutive quarter of decreasing revenue in this vital market, highlighting ongoing difficulties for the brand there.
Elsewhere, North American sales also experienced a dip, decreasing by 3% to $5.11 billion. This indicates a broader slowdown in some of Nike's established territories. However, strength was observed in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA), where sales rose by 14% to $3.36 billion. Growth also occurred in Latin America and the Asia Pacific region (excluding China), with sales increasing by 2% to $1.51 billion.
Looking ahead, Nike’s forward guidance projects revenue growth in the low single digits for the upcoming fiscal year. The company anticipates a flat to slightly down performance in its first fiscal quarter. These projections suggest a cautious outlook for the immediate future, as the company navigates various market dynamics.
