Diljit Dosanjh's film, "Satluj," has made its global debut on the streaming platform ZEE5 Global, accessible to audiences in over 190 countries. This drama, which draws inspiration from the life of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra, is reportedly presented in its complete, unedited version, according to Variety. The journey to this release was protracted, marked by a three-year period of contention with India's Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The film, initially titled "Punjab '95," faced significant challenges during the certification process in India, leading to numerous requested modifications. Directed by Honey Trehan, "Satluj" features Dosanjh in the lead role, portraying Khalra. The narrative delves into Khalra's dedicated efforts to uncover and publicize the clandestine abductions and killings of thousands in Punjab during the 1980s and 1990s. His work brought to light the devastating impact of state-sponsored violence during a tumultuous period in the region. The film was produced by RSVP and MacGuffin Pictures. The decision to release the movie globally on ZEE5 without any alterations underscores the filmmakers' commitment to presenting their original vision. This widespread availability allows international viewers to experience the story as intended by its creators, free from the restrictions that initially delayed its distribution in India. Khalra's story is a powerful account of courage and resilience in the face of grave injustice. He was a banker who turned human rights activist following the disappearance of his friends and neighbors. His investigations in Punjab led him to discover evidence of thousands of extrajudicial killings and cremations by police. Khalra himself disappeared in 1995, and it was later confirmed he was abducted and murdered by police officers. The film's availability on ZEE5 Global provides a significant platform for this important historical narrative to reach a broad international audience. The producers and lead actor have expressed their satisfaction that the full version of the film is now accessible, allowing the integrity of their storytelling to remain intact.
