Cryptocurrency Price Predictions Trimmed by Citi Amid ETF Outflows
Citi has revised its projected values for Bitcoin and Ethereum downwards, citing a shift in exchange-traded fund (ETF) investments from inflows to outflows. This adjustment reflects a more cautious outlook on the immediate future of the major digital assets.

Citi has lowered its price targets for leading cryptocurrencies Bitcoin and Ethereum, a move attributed to a recent reversal in investment trends for crypto-backed exchange-traded funds. Previously experiencing significant capital injections, these ETFs are now seeing funds withdrawn, influencing the financial institution's updated assessment.
The revised forecasts from Citi indicate a less bullish stance on Bitcoin, with its year-end 2024 expectation reduced to $25,000 from an earlier projection of $35,000. For Ethereum, the adjustment is equally notable, dropping to $1,300, down from the prior estimate of $1,750, according to Investing.com.
This downward revision follows a period where Bitcoin spot ETFs, in particular, witnessed substantial inflows after their introduction to the market. Experts had anticipated that these new investment vehicles would provide a sustained boost to the cryptocurrency market by attracting a broader range of investors, including institutional players.
However, recent data suggests a cooling of this initial enthusiasm. The shift from net positive inflows to net negative outflows in these investment products has become a key factor in Citi's revised analysis. This trend suggests that some investors are either divesting from their current positions or choosing to reallocate capital away from the crypto ETF space.
The performance of Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC) has been a significant contributor to these outflows. After converting to a spot ETF, GBTC has experienced considerable redemptions, impacting the overall market sentiment and the net flow figures for the entire sector. While other spot Bitcoin ETFs have seen some positive inflows, these have not been sufficient to offset the larger withdrawals from GBTC.
Analysts at Citi are now closely monitoring these funding shifts as indicators of broader market sentiment. The change in ETF flow dynamics is viewed as a critical metric for understanding investor participation and conviction in the digital asset space. The move highlights how traditional financial institutions are increasingly incorporating the performance of regulated investment products into their cryptocurrency market outlooks.
