Japanese equities registered substantial losses as the trading session drew to a close, with key indices experiencing a downturn. The benchmark Nikkei 225 index, a primary indicator of the health of the Japanese stock market, fell by 2.63 percent, signaling a challenging day for investors in the region. This performance marks a significant daily decline for the prominent index. According to Investing.com, the market closed firmly in negative territory, highlighting widespread selling pressure. The broader TOPIX index also recorded a decrease, shedding 2.05 percent, while the JPX-Nikkei 400 index mirrored these trends with a 2.15 percent reduction by the end of the trading day. These figures collectively paint a picture of a market facing considerable headwinds. Among the various sectors, those related to transportation, banking, and real estate were particularly affected, experiencing some of the steepest drops. Conversely, some smaller gains were observed in specific segments like electric power, gas, and utilities, though these were insufficient to offset the overall market slump. The mixed sector performance indicates a selective investor approach amidst the general bearish sentiment. The Japanese yen showed a slight depreciation against the US dollar, with the pair trading at 155.83. Against the Euro, the yen strengthened marginally, settling at 167.33. In the commodities markets, crude oil futures for June delivery saw a small increase of 0.20 percent, reaching $79.13 a barrel. Similarly, Brent oil futures for July delivery also edged up by 0.17 percent, trading at $83.67 per barrel. Gold futures, a traditional safe-haven asset, exhibited a modest gain of 0.18 percent, with prices at $2,323.20 a troy ounce. The volume of trading on the Tokyo Stock Exchange saw 1.25 billion shares changing hands, while 964.83 million shares were traded in the secondary market. These trading volumes suggest active participation despite the prevailing negative market conditions. The number of declining stocks far outpaced those that advanced, with 1,220 issues closing lower, 381 ending higher, and 47 remaining unchanged, underscoring the broad-based nature of the day's losses.
