The animation landscape in Spain's Canary Islands is poised for substantial growth following a considerable investment in a nascent production company. Amuse Labs, a newly established animation studio situated in the archipelago, is receiving a significant capital injection, as reported by Variety.
The Spanish government is channeling €6.4 million, equivalent to approximately $7.3 million, into Amuse Labs. This strategic financial commitment is being facilitated through SETT, a state-supported investment vehicle focused on technology. This move is designed to accelerate the Canary Islands' broader objective of establishing itself as a leading international hub for creating children's intellectual property.
In total, the project has attracted $15.1 million in combined public and private funds. The state-backed entity, SETT, will acquire a 48% ownership stake in Amuse Labs as part of this arrangement. The remaining 52% of the company's equity will be held by a consortium of private investors, indicating a strong collaborative effort between governmental initiatives and independent capital.
Variety further indicates that the private investment component includes contributions from three distinct entities. The majority private share, amounting to 26%, is held by an undisclosed international animation group, signaling global interest in the region's creative potential. Additionally, two other entities, a family office named Ricca and investment firm Volcano Capital, each hold 13% stakes in the new venture. This diversified ownership structure reflects confidence in the long-term prospects of Amuse Labs and the animation industry in the Canary Islands.
The initiative underscores a concerted effort to foster a thriving creative economy within the Spanish islands, leveraging their strategic location and existing incentives to attract and develop high-value media production. The focus on children's intellectual property suggests an aim to create original content with broad international appeal, positioning the Canary Islands as a significant player in the competitive global animation market.
