The cinematic release of the war drama "Peluru Senja: The Ghost & the Gun" is scheduled for August 28 across Malaysia, as reported by Variety. This debut is strategically timed to align with the country's Independence Day weekend, offering a significant cultural moment for its unveiling.
MSK Cinemas, a local distribution company, will manage the distribution and exhibition of the film throughout Malaysia. This much-anticipated feature, presented in the Bahasa Malaysia language, marks the third directorial endeavor for Anshul Tiwari, an Indian filmmaker based in Singapore. Tiwari's previous works include "The Revolution" (2022) and his debut feature, "Nirvana," which premiered in 2021.
"Peluru Senja: The Ghost & the Gun" is set against the backdrop of World War II, specifically in Malaya during the Japanese occupation, which commenced in 1941. The narrative aims to depict the profound impact of this historical period on the local populace. The story centers on a young man who joins the resistance movement after witnessing his family endure atrocities, evolving into a skilled sharpshooter. He is tasked with a perilous mission: to assassinate a high-ranking Japanese officer.
The film boasts a cast predominantly comprising Malaysian talent, with a notable exception in its lead, who is an Indian actor. This casting choice for the protagonist, according to Variety, has been clarified by Tiwari as a decision made to honor the historical contributions of Indian individuals within the anti-Japanese resistance efforts in Southeast Asia. Tiwari emphasized the importance of acknowledging the diverse roles played by different ethnic groups during that era.
Principal photography for "Peluru Senja: The Ghost & the Gun" took place over 35 days in various locations across Malaysia, including Perak, Malacca, and Johor, as well as in Singapore. The production budget for the movie was approximately $1 million. After its theatrical run in Malaysia, the film is slated for an international release later in the year, with distribution rights already secured for the United States, Japan, and India.
