An analyst has outlined how he is employing options trading to potentially profit from a resurgence in eBay's market performance. This strategy, according to CNBC, focuses on anticipating a positive shift in the e-commerce giant's stock trajectory without the involvement of activist investors. The approach described by Tony Zhang involves utilizing put credit spreads and call debit spreads. Specifically, he highlighted selling the December 40/35 put spread, collecting a credit of approximately 90 cents. Concurrently, he suggested purchasing the December 50/55 call spread for a cost of around 85 cents. This combination aims to create a neutral to bullish position, allowing the investor to potentially benefit if eBay's stock price remains within a certain range or moves upwards. Zhang's analysis suggests that eBay's current valuation makes it an attractive candidate for such options strategies. He observed that the company's price-to-earnings multiple is relatively low when compared to its historical averages and industry peers. This depressed valuation, in his view, presents an opportunity for a rebound, especially as the company continues to focus on improving its core business operations. The e-commerce platform has been undertaking various initiatives to enhance its user experience and seller tools, which are expected to contribute to its financial recovery. These efforts include streamlining its marketplace, investing in advertising, and introducing new features designed to attract and retain both buyers and sellers. The expectation is that these internal improvements will drive organic growth and consequently, its stock price. The options strategy detailed by Zhang aims to capitalize on this anticipated upward movement while managing risk. By combining both put and call spreads, the investor limits both potential losses and gains, creating a defined risk-reward profile. This method is often favored by traders who have a specific price target or range in mind for an underlying asset.
