The automotive conglomerate Stellantis is reportedly deepening its alliance with the Chinese electric vehicle company Leapmotor, according to Seeking Alpha. This enhanced partnership involves plans to commence manufacturing Leapmotor vehicles at Stellantis's plant in Spain, marking a significant step in their joint efforts. Initially, Stellantis had outlined intentions to begin producing Leapmotor models at its facility in Tychy, Poland. However, reports suggest that the strategy has evolved to include manufacturing operations in Spain as well. This dual-location approach could accelerate the availability of Leapmotor vehicles in the European market. The collaboration between Stellantis and Leapmotor was first announced in October of the previous year. Under the terms of this agreement, Stellantis acquired a substantial stake of approximately 21% in Leapmotor, a move valued at around 1.5 billion euros. Furthermore, the two companies established a joint venture, giving Stellantis exclusive rights to produce, export, and sell Leapmotor products outside of China. This strategic partnership aims to leverage Stellantis's extensive manufacturing capabilities and distribution networks to introduce Leapmotor's competitive electric vehicle offerings to a wider international audience. The decision to expand production into Spain underscores a more aggressive push into the European market, potentially mitigating logistical challenges and tariffs associated with importing vehicles directly from China. The initial focus for manufacturing in Poland was understood to be on models such as the Leapmotor T03, a compact electric car, and potentially other suitable models for the European consumer base. The inclusion of the Spanish plant could allow for greater production volumes or even diversify the range of Leapmotor vehicles assembled in Europe. Such an expansion reflects Stellantis's commitment to its electrification strategy and its proactive approach to integrating lower-cost EV options into its portfolio. By producing these vehicles within Europe, the companies can better address local market demands, regulatory requirements, and supply chain efficiencies, ultimately aiming to capture a larger share of the rapidly growing electric vehicle segment.
