Wales is set to kick off their Nations Championship campaign with a revamped squad for their encounter with Fiji. Interim head coach Steve Tandy has made six alterations to the team that previously secured a victory against the Barbarians, according to BBC Sport.
Among the notable changes, Louis Rees-Zammit shifts from his recent role at fullback back to the wing, a position he has frequently occupied. He will feature on the right wing, while Rio Dyer is slated for the left wing. Cai Evans is set to make his debut start at fullback, having previously earned one cap as a replacement during the World Cup warm-up matches.
The forward pack also sees considerable adjustments. Nicky Smith is introduced at loose-head prop, joining Elliot Dee at hooker and Keiron Assiratti at tight-head. This front-row combination will be tasked with setting a strong foundation against a formidable Fiji side.
Further changes in the forwards include the return of Christ Tshiunza to the blind-side flanker position. He will line up alongside Jac Morgan, who leads the team as captain from the open-side flank, and Taulupe Faletau, who retains his spot at number eight.
The half-back pairing remains consistent with Gareth Davies at scrum-half and Sam Costelow at fly-half, providing continuity in the crucial playmaking roles. The midfield will see Owen Watkin and Mason Grady forming the centre partnership.
The substitutes' bench features a mix of experienced players and those looking to make an impact. This includes Corey Domachowski, Henry Thomas, Ben Carter, Taine Plumtree, Kieran Hardy, and Ioan Lloyd. Gareth Anscombe, originally named, is now unavailable due to a groin issue, with Ioan Lloyd stepping in. Another late change sees Ben Carter replacing Teddy Williams among the replacements due to a minor back complaint. The strategic deployment of these reserves will be crucial as Wales navigates the challenges posed by Fiji in their opening Nations Championship match.
