Mavis Tire Express Inc. has agreed to acquire the prominent automotive service provider Pep Boys from Icahn Enterprises L.P. The transaction is valued at an estimated $700 million, signaling a major move within the auto maintenance industry. The Wall Street Journal reports that this deal will transfer ownership of the well-known auto service and tire brand.
Icahn Enterprises initially purchased Pep Boys in 2016 for nearly $1 billion, at which time it operated over 800 locations across the United States. Following the acquisition, the company underwent a strategic shift, pivoting its focus primarily towards its automotive service segments, including parts, tire, and repair services, while divesting its retail operations. The sale to Mavis represents a substantial strategic change for the auto service business previously owned by the Icahn group.
Under the terms of the agreement, Mavis Tire Express Inc. will gain control of more than 530 Pep Boys service centers. These locations are spread across 36 states and Puerto Rico, significantly expanding Mavis's operational footprint. Interestingly, Icahn Enterprises will retain ownership of a portion of the real estate associated with these facilities, continuing to hold properties that will be leased back to Mavis as part of the arrangement.
This sale allows Icahn Enterprises to divest a significant holding and potentially reallocate capital to other ventures. For Mavis Tire Express, a major player in the automotive repair sector, the addition of Pep Boys' extensive network of service centers and established brand recognition is expected to bolster its market position. The combination of these entities is anticipated to create a formidable presence in the competitive automotive service landscape, offering an expanded array of services and locations to consumers across the country. The acquisition underscores ongoing consolidation trends observed within the vehicle maintenance and repair sector.
