French tennis player Samuel Bensoussan will face an extended period away from the sport following the International Tennis Integrity Agency's (ITIA) decision to prolong his match-fixing ban. The initial suspension has been increased by three years, according to BBC Sport, after Bensoussan's appeal was rejected. The ITIA confirmed that the additional three-year penalty stems from violations related to betting and integrity rules within the sport. This extension means the French athlete, who achieved a career-high singles ranking of 343, will now be prohibited from competing or attending any official tennis events for a significantly longer duration. The original sanctions against Bensoussan were imposed in February 2023. At that time, the ITIA announced a lifetime ban for match-fixing, along with a fine of $50,000. These penalties were levied after an investigation into multiple alleged breaches of the Tennis Anti-Corruption Program (TACP). Details released earlier by the ITIA indicated that Bensoussan admitted to several charges of contriving the outcome of matches for financial gain. The investigation revealed that these incidents occurred at six different tournaments between 2014 and 2018. Furthermore, he was found to have failed to report corrupt approaches he received during that period. Despite the gravity of the initial sanctions, Bensoussan chose to appeal the decision. The recent announcement from the ITIA confirms that this appeal was not successful, leading directly to the additional three-year extension of his existing ban. The agency maintains a strict stance on integrity, aiming to preserve the fairness and credibility of professional tennis. This development underscores the ongoing efforts by tennis authorities to combat corruption within the sport. The ITIA, as the guardian of integrity in professional tennis, consistently investigates and penalizes players found to be involved in activities that compromise fair play, sending a clear message to those who might consider violating its rules.
