Russian stock performance saw a decline by the end of Wednesday's trading session. The primary benchmark for the nation's equities, the MOEX Russia Index, recorded a decrease of 2.26% at the close of markets.
Contributing to the overall market downturn were various sectors, with prominent losses observed in the mining, manufacturing, and power industries. These sectors experienced considerable reductions in value, influencing the broader index movement, according to Investing.com.
Among individual companies, Magnit suffered a 3.42% reduction in share value, settling at 6,707.00. Similarly, Surgutneftegas Pref also saw a decline, dropping 3.32% to 47.78 by the end of the trading period. Rosneft PA followed this trend with a 3.14% fall, bringing its share price to 585.50.
On the Moscow Exchange, the number of declining stocks significantly outnumbered those that advanced. Out of 172 traded instruments, 149 experienced a drop in value, while only 16 saw gains, and 7 remained unchanged. The broader market sentiment was clearly negative, reflecting apprehension among investors.
The volatility index, which measures implied volatility of MOEX Russia options, increased by 1.63%, reaching a level of 19.33. This rise in volatility suggests that market participants anticipate greater price fluctuations in the near future.
In the commodities markets, futures for Brent crude oil, a key export for Russia, saw a marginal increase of 0.22%, trading at $82.78 a barrel. Similarly, U.S. crude oil futures advanced by 0.19% to $78.02 per barrel. Gold futures, another significant commodity, also edged higher by 0.12%, reaching $2,070.70 an ounce.
The decline in Russian stocks occurred after the MOEX Russia Index had previously shown some upward momentum, reaching an all-time high of 3,322.69. However, this earlier positive trend reversed, leading to the substantial losses observed at the market close.
