Global reinsurer SCOR has reported a solid financial performance for the opening quarter of the current fiscal year, successfully navigating a period marked by considerable pressure on premiums during its renewal negotiations. This achievement highlights the company's ability to maintain a strong financial footing amidst a challenging market landscape, according to Investing.com.
The firm's gross written premiums escalated significantly, reaching €5.23 billion for the first three months ending March 31. This represents a notable increase of 6.2% when measured at constant exchange rates compared to the same period last year. The growth was primarily propelled by the property and casualty (P&C) reinsurance division, which saw its gross written premiums expand by an impressive 10.7% at constant exchange rates, totaling €3.30 billion.
Conversely, the life and health reinsurance segment experienced a slight reduction in its gross written premiums, which decreased by 0.5% at constant exchange rates to €1.93 billion. Despite this marginal decline in one area, the overall company's growth trajectory remained positive.
SCOR's net income for the first quarter soared to €186 million, a substantial rise from the €134 million reported in the corresponding period of the previous year. This upward trend in profitability underscores the effectiveness of the company's operational strategies.
The annualized return on equity (ROE) for the quarter stood at an impressive 23.4%, significantly surpassing the firm's long-term target of 800 basis points above the risk-free rate. This robust ROE indicates strong shareholder value creation.
Furthermore, the annualized insurance service result reached €227 million, with the P&C division contributing €128 million and the life and health division adding €99 million. The combined ratio for the P&C reinsurance segment improved to 89.2%, a positive development reflecting efficient claims management and underwriting.
The firm's solvency ratio was estimated to be 202% as of March 31, 2024, falling within the optimal range of 180% to 220%. This healthy solvency position demonstrates SCOR's strong capital adequacy and its capacity to absorb potential shocks.
Looking ahead, SCOR reiterated its financial objectives for 2024, which include targeting an insurance service result of €2.1 billion and a return on equity of 800 basis points over the risk-free rate. The company's first-quarter performance positions it well to achieve these ambitious targets.
