The Portuguese stock market concluded its trading day with an impressive gain, as the benchmark PSI index recorded a significant increase. This surge, amounting to 1.40%, positioned the index at 6,590.72 as the session ended. The market's positive momentum was widely observed across a range of companies. Several sectors contributed to this favorable outcome, with notable performances in basic materials, industrials, and consumer services. Within the basic materials segment, Semapa saw its shares climb by 1.63%, closing at 16.220. Similarly, Corticeira Cofina shares advanced by 0.32%, reaching 9.480, and The Navigator Company saw a modest increase of 0.15%, finishing at 3.990. The industrial sector also played a role in the market's upward trajectory. Mota Engil SGPS SA's stock rose by 0.94%, with its final trading price settling at 3.654. In the consumer services sphere, prominent companies like Jeronimo Martins SGPS and NOS SGPS SA also experienced an uptick in their share values. Jeronimo Martins shares appreciated by 0.74%, closing at 20.300, while NOS SGPS SA saw a gain of 0.81%, ending the day at 3.754. Conversely, a few companies experienced a decline in their stock value, though these were largely outweighed by the market's overall gains. Altri SGPS SA registered a decrease of 1.42%, concluding at 5.560. BCP dipped by 1.39%, closing at 0.3087, and Pharol SGPS SA saw its shares fall by 0.61%, reaching a final price of 0.0810. The session's trading volume underscored the active nature of the market. Across the Lisbon stock exchange, advancing shares outnumbered declining ones by a comfortable margin, with 38 companies seeing gains compared to 12 declines, while 7 remained unchanged. This lopsided ratio further highlighted the day's positive sentiment. The volatility index, known as the VIX, which measures market expectations of near-term volatility, showed a minimal change, indicating relative stability despite the price movements. In the commodities market, futures for Brent oil dipped slightly by 0.11% to $87.16 a barrel, and crude oil futures saw a more pronounced decrease of 0.23%, trading at $82.52 a barrel. Gold futures, however, experienced an increase of 0.14%, reaching $2,347.10 a troy ounce. The euro strengthened against the dollar, rising by 0.15% to 1.07 USD, while the EUR/GBP pair remained largely stable. Investing.com reports that the session concluded with a generally optimistic sentiment for Portuguese equities, driven by broad-based gains.
