The Royal Household Bureau of Thailand has announced the death of Princess Bajrakitiyabha Narendira Debyavati, the eldest daughter of King Maha Vajiralongkorn. The princess, 47, passed away in a Bangkok hospital after an extended period of illness, according to Al Jazeera.
Princess Bajrakitiyabha had been in a coma for three years. Her health struggles began in December 2022 when she collapsed due to a heart condition during a military dog training exercise in Nakhon Ratchasima province. Despite immediate medical attention and continuous care, her condition did not improve.
Born on December 7, 1978, Princess Bajrakitiyabha was the only child of King Vajiralongkorn and his first wife, Princess Soamsawali. She held a prominent position within the Thai royal family and was highly respected for her contributions, particularly in the legal field.
Her Royal Highness earned a law degree from Thammasat University in Thailand, followed by master’s and doctoral degrees from Cornell University in the United States. She pursued a career in public service, working as a prosecutor and later as the Thai ambassador to Austria.
The princess was also deeply involved in advocating for women's rights and improving the lives of incarcerated women, working with the United Nations on these crucial issues. Her efforts played a significant role in promoting humane treatment and better conditions within the justice system.
Her passing marks a moment of national mourning for Thailand, as the public reflects on her dedicated service and influential role. The Royal Household Bureau has announced a period of mourning, and details regarding funeral rites are expected to be released soon.
