A recent report by Global Witness has highlighted alarming statistics regarding the fatality rates of environmental and land defenders across the globe. In 2025, at least 124 defenders were killed, contributing to an overall total of 2,375 deaths since the year 2012.
The organization found that nearly half of these killings occurred in two countries, Colombia and Brazil, which together accounted for 52 percent of the global total. This significant statistic underscores the perilous conditions that environmental advocates face in South America, where land conflicts and exploitation remain rampant.
Wider trends indicate that defenders across various regions are increasingly subjected to harassment and criminalization. In Asia, in particular, the report suggests a growing climate of intimidation that further endangers those dedicated to protecting land rights and the environment.
Moreover, the data reveals that a majority of the fatalities involved marginalized groups. Roughly three-quarters of those killed were small-scale farmers, Indigenous Peoples, or individuals of Afro-descendant backgrounds. Outstandingly, Indigenous Peoples accounted for 44 documented killings in 2025 alone, highlighting their vulnerability in land dispute situations, which were the driving factor behind more than half of the reported killings.
The continuous threats to land and environmental defenders raise urgent questions about the protection of human rights globally. The grim statistics shed light on the pressing need for more robust protections for those who advocate for ecological preservation and environmental justice.
The Global Witness report serves not just as a grim tally but as a call to action for nations and organizations to improve safety measures for environment defenders, promote awareness of their plight, and address the underlying issues leading to these deadly confrontations. With the ongoing climate crisis and increasing corporate interests in land, the challenge of safeguarding those who defend our forests, rivers, and lands has never been more critical.
The findings of Global Witness present an extraordinary insight into the dangers faced by these advocates, urging global stakeholders to take responsibility in protecting the rights and lives of those committed to environmental stewardship, according to AllAfrica Top.
