The Portuguese stock market saw a marginal uptick as the trading day concluded on Friday, January 19, 2024. The PSI 20, the country's benchmark index, registered a modest rise of 0.13%, reflecting a generally positive sentiment amongst investors, according to Investing.com. Contributing to this upward trend were sectors such as utilities, consumer services, and industry. Gains in these areas helped to counteract some of the downward pressure experienced elsewhere in the market. Among the top performers propelling the index higher were shares of EDP Renovaveis, which climbed by 1.83% or 0.35 points, finishing the session at 19.50. Jeronimo Martins also saw a notable increase, rising by 1.05% or 0.22 points to close at 21.28. Galp Energia added to the positive momentum with a gain of 1.05% or 0.14 points, with its shares trading at 13.56 at the close. Conversely, some companies experienced a downturn, tempering the overall market performance. Sonae was among those that saw their share price fall, decreasing by 0.76% or 0.007 points to end at 0.923. Corticeira Amorim also finished lower, dropping 0.54% or 0.04 points, closing at 7.37. CTT Correios de Portugal shares declined by 0.52% or 0.02 points, settling at 3.86. The trading volume for the session showed a mixed picture. A total of 3.868 million shares traded on the Euronext Lisbon exchange, with 46 unchanged, 5 gaining, and 9 declining. This indicates a relatively active but somewhat cautious market as participants weighed various factors. In the commodities market, the price of Brent oil for March delivery rose by 2.45%, reaching $78.89 a barrel. Correspondingly, crude oil futures for March delivery also saw an increase of 2.72%, trading at $73.30 a barrel. Gold futures, in contrast, experienced a minor decrease of 0.02%, settling at $2,028.90 an ounce. The euro demonstrated a slight weakening against the U.S. dollar, dropping 0.09% to trade at 1.0886. The EUR/GBP pair remained largely stable, showing a minimal shift of 0.01%, with the exchange rate at 0.8546.
