The Liberian government's Finance Minister, Augustine Kpehe Ngafuan, revealed in a recent address that the country's historic tax revenue of $1 billion has already been fully utilized. Instead of accumulating in government reserves, these funds have been directed towards various expenses, including the salaries of new military personnel, overdue payments to local banks, and financial obligations to media outlets.
Ngafuan emphasized that approximately $200 million of this tax revenue stems from a one-time payment related to mining activities, expected to be a non-repeating event. As this substantial portion is not expected to recur in the future, the Minister informed listeners that the government is preparing for a budgetary shortfall that it anticipates will arise in the coming years.
