The television adaptation of "Baywatch" has successfully obtained the necessary approval to utilize overnight parking at Venice Beach for its production vehicles, Variety reports. This recent development from the California Coastal Commission now permits the crew to occupy 27 designated parking spots situated within the lot adjacent to the Venice lifeguard headquarters. This approval marks a resolution to permit complications that emerged earlier in the spring. Initially, the production was granted a permit that did not include provisions for overnight parking. This earlier restriction meant that all production trucks and trailers had to be removed from the site each evening, only to return the following morning. This process, according to reports, caused considerable logistical difficulties and added significantly to the production's expenses due to the repeated setup and dismantling. The initial permit, issued by the Los Angeles County Department of Beaches and Harbors for various filming activities at Playa Vista, Hermosa Beach, and Venice, did not account for the specific overnight parking needs in Venice. The revised permit directly addresses this oversight, providing a more practical solution for the ongoing filming schedule. The Coastal Commission’s review of the permit amendment took into account the impact on public access to the beach. Concerns were raised that allowing production vehicles to occupy lifeguard parking spaces overnight could inadvertently restrict public entry to the beach area. However, the commission ultimately decided that the benefits of facilitating the production, coupled with the limited number of spaces requested, outweighed these potential concerns. The decision is expected to streamline the filming process dramatically for the "Baywatch" series, reducing operational complexities and potentially lowering costs associated with daily vehicle relocation. This allows the film crew to maintain a more consistent and efficient production schedule as they continue to shoot scenes in the iconic beachside location.
