Oil India Limited has successfully identified natural gas in its latest exploration effort within the Andaman offshore block, according to Yahoo Finance. This significant find marks the second such discovery for the state-owned enterprise in this particular region, furthering its exploration success.
The discovery was made in the Andaman Basin, an area that has been subject to previous exploratory activities by the company. The current finding stemmed from drilling operations at well A5-B1, situated within the block AN-OS/2. This block, part of the Andaman deepwater region, was initially awarded to Oil India by the Government of India as part of the Open Acreage Licensing Policy (OALP) Bid Round-II.
Preliminary assessments suggest the presence of a sizable natural gas accumulation within the Miocene gas sands, encountered at a depth ranging between 2,800 to 2,900 meters. The A5-B1 well was drilled to a total depth of 3,100 meters, allowing for thorough evaluation of the geological structures.
Following the completion of drilling, several tests were conducted, including wireline logging, which confirmed the presence of hydrocarbons. Further testing and analysis are expected to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the reservoir’s commercial viability and production potential.
This latest natural gas discovery builds upon the company's earlier success in the same block. Previously, Oil India had reported a gas find at well A4-A1 in the very same AN-OS/2 block. The repeated success in this region underscores the potential of the Andaman Basin as a future energy source for India.
The exploration and potential development of these offshore gas reserves could play a crucial role in enhancing India's domestic energy security and reducing its reliance on energy imports. The company is expected to continue its appraisal efforts to delineate the full extent of these new natural gas resources.
