Rivian Automotive has acknowledged a recent inquiry by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) regarding specific models of its electric vehicles. This preliminary investigation pertains to the power steering system in certain R1T pickup trucks and R1S SUVs. The electric vehicle manufacturer is actively collaborating with the federal agency as it assesses the situation.
According to Yahoo Finance, the NHTSA formally initiated its preliminary evaluation on December 13, 2023. This action by the federal safety regulator was prompted by 16 reported incidents involving a loss of power steering in the aforementioned Rivian vehicles. These incidents included nine complaints directly from owners and seven field reports submitted by the company itself.
The automaker has stated that it identified the potential issue within specific production batches. Following this discovery, Rivian proactively implemented improvements to the manufacturing process for its steering gear assemblies. The company has since asserted that vehicles produced after a certain date are equipped with the enhanced component.
In addition to the manufacturing adjustments, Rivian also detailed an earlier service campaign related to the steering system. This campaign focused on addressing power steering issues by updating software in affected vehicles. The company indicated that a significant portion of the vehicles involved in the service campaign have already received the necessary software update.
Rivian maintains that its R1T and R1S models meet all applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS). The company has also emphasized its ongoing commitment to vehicle safety and its open communication with the NHTSA throughout the evaluation process. The outcome of the NHTSA's preliminary evaluation will determine if further action, such as a recall, is warranted.
