JD Sports Fashion Plc has publicly disclosed its financial results for the fiscal year ending on February 3, 2024. The sportswear and fashion retailer reported a significant uptick in its group revenue, which climbed to £10.5 billion. This marks a substantial increase from the £10.1 billion recorded in the previous fiscal year, an improvement of 3.6% on a reported basis and 4.2% at constant exchange rates.
Despite the positive movement in sales, the company’s pre-tax profit saw a reduction. According to information obtained by Yahoo Finance, profit before tax and adjusted items decreased to £917.2 million, a drop from the £990.2 million reported in the prior fiscal period. This indicates a challenging environment for profitability, even as revenue streams have expanded. The adjusted profit before tax also reflected this trend, falling to £912.4 million from £993.8 million year-over-year. The statutory profit before tax experienced an even sharper decline, reaching £641 million compared to £975.4 million in the previous year.
The decline in profitability was partly attributed to higher operating costs. These expenses escalated as the business invested in strategic initiatives, including store expansion and digital platform enhancements. The capital expenditure for the period rose to £646 million, an increase from £612 million in the previous year, reflecting ongoing investments in the company's infrastructure and global footprint. The board has opted to maintain its final dividend at 48 pence per share, reinforcing its commitment to shareholder returns despite the profit headwinds.
Looking ahead, JD Sports projects its profit before tax and adjusted items for the upcoming fiscal year, ending February 1, 2025, to be within the range of £900 million to £980 million. The company anticipates a 1% to 4% growth in organic revenue and a capital expenditure similar to the current year, estimated at £550 million to £600 million. This outlook suggests a continued focus on managing costs while pursuing avenues for controlled revenue expansion and market penetration.
The company’s executive leadership expressed confidence in the long-term strategy, emphasizing investments in its global brand portfolio and operational infrastructure. They highlighted the importance of these strategic expenditures in sustaining future growth and market leadership in the highly competitive retail sector. The mixed financial performance underscores the dynamic nature of the retail industry, where revenue growth does not always directly translate into increased profitability.
