Natural gas storage levels across the United States registered a notable expansion in the last week of May, according to data released by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). The total volume of gas held in underground facilities increased by 95 billion cubic feet (Bcf) for the period concluding on May 29. This growth in inventory surpassed the median expectation of analysts surveyed by Reuters, who had forecast a rise of 90 Bcf. Bloomberg analysts had also estimated a 90 Bcf increase for the week, suggesting the actual build was larger than anticipated by leading financial news outlets. The previous week, ending May 22, had already seen a sizable increase of 82 Bcf in U.S. natural gas stockpiles. The five-year average for this particular week of the year is an injection of 97 Bcf, indicating that this latest increase is close to typical seasonal trends, though slightly below the historical average for this specific timeframe. However, the five-year average for the same week as the May 29 report is 91 Bcf, making the current increase more robust than the average for this specific week. Total working gas in storage reached 2,610 Bcf as of May 29. This figure represents a considerable surplus compared to the same period last year, demonstrating an excess of 754 Bcf. Furthermore, the current storage level stands 429 Bcf above the five-year average for this time of year. Futures prices for natural gas reacted to this data. The front-month futures contract for July delivery on the New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX) was observed at $1.761 per million British thermal units (MMBtu) at approximately 10:43 AM ET. This slight adjustment occurred following the disclosure of the inventory figures. Seeking Alpha, a financial news and analysis platform, highlighted the report's implications for market dynamics. Analysts continue to monitor these weekly storage reports closely, as they offer critical insights into the supply-demand balance within the natural gas market. Elevated storage levels typically suggest ample supply, which can influence price trajectories and market sentiment.
