Ted Turner, a titan of the media industry whose influence spanned from cable television to professional sports and global philanthropy, has died at 87 years old. The passing of the entrepreneurial figure, known for his dynamic personality and innovative spirit, was announced by Turner Enterprises, according to Variety. Turner's expansive career commenced with taking over his family's billboard advertising business, which he dramatically expanded. This early venture laid the groundwork for his entry into broadcasting, where he would ultimately revolutionize the television landscape. His strategic acquisition of various local stations culminated in the formation of WTBS, an Atlanta-based station that became a pioneering "superstation" distributed across the nation via satellite. His most monumental achievement was the establishment of Cable News Network (CNN) in 1980. This ambitious project launched the world's first 24-hour news channel, fundamentally altering how information was consumed globally. Despite initial skepticism, CNN swiftly became a dominant force, particularly during major international events, solidifying Turner's reputation as a visionary. Beyond news, Turner's media empire grew to include Turner Broadcasting System, which encompassed popular networks such as TNT, TBS, and Cartoon Network. He also made significant forays into professional sports, owning the Atlanta Braves baseball team and the Atlanta Hawks basketball team, leading both franchises to notable successes. In his later years, Turner became a prominent philanthropist and environmentalist. A significant portion of his wealth was dedicated to charitable causes, most notably through his historic $1 billion donation to establish the United Nations Foundation, supporting global initiatives for peace and environmental protection. He also founded the Captain Planet Foundation, which focuses on environmental education for children. In September of 2018, Turner publicly revealed his diagnosis of Lewy body dementia, a progressive neurological disorder impacting memory and cognitive functions. Despite this health challenge, he remained an inspiration to many, remembered for his audacious vision and unwavering commitment to his diverse passions. His legacy continues to resonate across the media world, in sports, and in international philanthropy, marking him as a singular figure of the late 20th and early 21st centuries.
