Collins Aerospace, a business unit of RTX, is set to significantly upgrade its Malaysian maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) operations through a substantial investment. The company has earmarked $63 million for its facility in Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport in Subang, Selangor, according to Seeking Alpha. This financial commitment underscores the aerospace giant's strategy to fortify its presence and service offerings within the crucial Asia-Pacific market.
The capital infusion is specifically directed towards several key areas to improve the facility's infrastructure and technological capabilities. A major portion involves the introduction of new test stands and an expanded overhaul capability for electric generators. These additions are critical for supporting a wider range of aircraft components and systems, reflecting the evolving needs of modern aviation.
Furthermore, the investment will facilitate the establishment of a state-of-the-art innovation center. This center is envisioned as a hub for developing advanced MRO techniques and solutions, potentially fostering breakthroughs in aerospace maintenance. The Subang facility, which commenced operations in 2022, currently employs approximately 270 individuals. This fresh investment is anticipated to create more than 100 new skilled positions, boosting local employment opportunities in the high-tech aerospace sector.
Collins Aerospace's decision to expand its Malaysian hub is strategically sound given the robust growth of the aviation industry in the Asia-Pacific region. As air travel continues to rebound and expand, the demand for sophisticated MRO services is likewise on an upward trajectory. By enhancing its Subang facility, Collins Aerospace aims to capture a larger share of this burgeoning market, offering expedited and more comprehensive support to its airline customers in the vicinity.
The facility currently services a diverse array of aircraft components, encompassing everything from electric power generators and integrated drive generators to air turbine starters and emergency power systems. The planned upgrades will broaden these capabilities, allowing for the servicing of newer generation components and increased capacity to handle a greater volume of repairs and overhauls. This move reinforces Collins Aerospace's commitment to operational excellence and customer satisfaction in a competitive global landscape.
