The esteemed Locarno Pro initiative, First Look, is gearing up to commemorate its fifteenth anniversary with a special focus on Uruguayan cinematic endeavors. This year, the program will unveil half a dozen new film titles, offering a significant platform for burgeoning productions from the South American country. According to Variety, the selection process for these films was conducted in collaboration with ACAU, Uruguay's national film institute, underscoring a dedicated partnership to promote the nation's film industry. This spotlight aims to introduce international industry professionals to the diverse storytelling and creative vision emerging from Uruguay. Among the featured projects is "Maltrato animal," directed by José Dell'Acqua Postiglione. This narrative explores the life of a veterinarian facing personal and professional difficulties, who unexpectedly becomes entangled in an illicit network. Another notable inclusion is "La gran aventura," a family-oriented tale directed by Fernando Epstein, recognized for his previous works like "25 Watts." His latest offering delves into themes of childhood and discovery through the eyes of two young protagonists. Carolina Campo's film, currently operating under the working title "Tierra del fuego," offers a compelling drama centered on longing that, as described, maintains its intensity across geographical boundaries. "Los de abajo," by Benjamín Nahum, promises a coming-of-age story set against a backdrop of complex human relationships. Federico Veiroj, known for directing "The Apostate," contributes "Las calles," a contemplative piece exploring urban life and personal journeys. Finally, the collection is rounded out by "El último quilombo" from director Lucía Garibaldi, a drama exploring cultural heritage and generational shifts within a community. These six films represent a broad spectrum of genres and themes, from intimate character studies to expansive adventure narratives, reflecting the vibrant and evolving landscape of Uruguayan filmmaking. The First Look section traditionally provides a crucial opportunity for filmmakers to secure funding, distribution, and international co-production partners, facilitating the completion and global reach of their projects.
