Red Bull Racing is set to implement a modification to its car's aerodynamic package for the Belgian Grand Prix. The team will revert to a more conventional rear wing design, a strategic adjustment made after incidents involving their lead driver, Max Verstappen.
Verstappen was involved in significant high-speed collisions during the two most recent Formula 1 races, prompting a review of the car's setup. This move, reported by BBC Sport, aims to enhance stability and address concerns stemming from those unfortunate events.
The previous races saw Verstappen's vehicle sustain substantial damage. At the British Grand Prix, a major crash occurred during the opening lap, leading to his withdrawal from the competition. Similarly, at the Hungarian Grand Prix, the Dutch driver was involved in another high-speed incident, although he managed to continue and finish the race in ninth position.
Team principal Christian Horner previously acknowledged the significant financial impact of these accidents, estimating the damage from the Silverstone crash alone to be around £1.3 million. He further noted that the Hungaroring incident added another £750,000 to the repair bill, highlighting the substantial costs associated with high-speed impacts.
The team's decision to change the wing comes as they prepare for the challenging Spa-Francorchamps circuit in Belgium, known for its high-speed sections and demanding corners. A conventional wing is typically designed to offer greater downforce and stability, which could be crucial on such a track.
This alteration signifies a proactive step by Red Bull to ensure vehicle integrity and driver safety, while also optimizing performance. The focus will be on delivering a reliable and competitive package for Verstappen as the championship battle intensifies.
