A Kenya Power staff member was apprehended by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission on Tuesday concerning bribery allegations. The individual is accused of soliciting a 20,000 Kenyan Shilling gratification related to a service dispute in Vihiga County, according to reports from AllAfrica Top.
The arrest stemmed from a complaint filed by a resident in Vihiga. This individual claimed that the Kenya Power employee demanded the money to rectify an issue affecting their electricity supply. The EACC initiated an investigation following this report.
The apprehended employee reportedly requested the sum to resolve a problem with electric cables at the complainant's homestead. Authorities disclosed that the utility firm's staff member was taken into custody while allegedly receiving a portion of the demanded funds.
Following the detention, the suspect was transported to the EACC Western regional offices situated in Kisumu for further questioning. This incident highlights ongoing efforts by anti-corruption bodies to address graft within public service providers in Kenya.
The EACC has consistently urged citizens to report any instances of public officials soliciting bribes for services. This particular case underscores the challenges faced by ordinary citizens when attempting to access essential services without facing unlawful demands.
Investigations into the matter are ongoing, and it is anticipated that the individual will face formal charges upon the conclusion of the inquiry. The commission maintains its stance on prosecuting those found culpable of corruption, aiming to deter such practices across various sectors.
