Zumiez Inc. saw its stock price decrease significantly after the company announced its financial predictions for the second fiscal quarter. The retailer, known for its action sports apparel and accessories, provided a mixed report for its initial quarter, revealing that while revenue surpassed analyst estimates, profit figures did not meet projections, according to Seeking Alpha.
For the first quarter, which concluded on May 4, Zumiez posted earnings per share of -$0.36. This result was below the average analyst forecast of -$0.23 per share. Despite the earnings miss, the company's net sales reached $196.2 million, outperforming the anticipated $194.9 million.
Looking ahead, Zumiez has issued guidance for the second quarter that suggests continued challenges. The company projects earnings per share to be in the range of -$0.34 to -$0.24, which is considerably lower than the consensus analyst estimate of -$0.04. Furthermore, anticipated net sales for the second quarter are expected to fall between $213 million and $219 million, also below the average forecast of $223 million.
Several factors contributed to the first-quarter performance. Overall comparable sales, a key metric in retail, decreased by 9.3%. Store comparable sales also saw a decline of 10.4%, while e-commerce comparable sales experienced a 6.2% reduction. The decrease in comparable sales for the entire business was primarily driven by lower transaction volumes.
Broken down by geographic region, North America reported a comparable sales decrease of 10.1%, with international operations seeing a much smaller decline of 0.8%. Gross profit during the quarter was $53.8 million, translating to a gross margin of 27.4% of net sales, an improvement from 25.1% in the prior year's first quarter.
Selling, general, and administrative expenses amounted to $60.3 million, or 30.7% of net sales. This represents an increase compared to the $58.1 million, or 28.5% of net sales, reported in the same period last year. The operating loss for the quarter was $6.5 million, an improvement from an operating loss of $10.1 million in the previous year. The net loss attributable to Zumiez Inc. was $6.9 million, or -$0.36 per share, compared to a net loss of $9.6 million, or -$0.50 per share, in the comparable quarter of the prior year. The company finished the quarter with $159.2 million in cash and current marketable securities, with no debt.
