The government of Borno State has firmly rejected assertions of a ransom being provided for the recent liberation of 360 people. These individuals were successfully retrieved from the Mandara Mountains, an area recognized as a powerful base for terrorist activities in the southern part of Borno, according to AllAfrica Top. Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Professor Usman Tar, addressed the public regarding these allegations. He emphasized that the state government operates with complete transparency and would openly disclose if any financial transaction had occurred to achieve the release of the captives. Professor Tar underscored that such payment would be publicly acknowledged, asserting that no such transaction took place in this instance. Professor Tar further elaborated on the operational details. He stated that the rescue was the outcome of a coordinated effort involving both the military and the local civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF). This joint mission culminated in the successful extraction of the 360 individuals from the dangerous mountainous terrain that has long been a sanctuary for insurgents. He clarified that those rescued were not previously abducted, but rather individuals who had been trapped in the mountainous region. They had sought refuge there to escape ongoing insecurity and the persistent threat of extremist factions operating in the area. The commissioner highlighted that these individuals were subsequently relocated to resettlement camps, indicating that they were internally displaced persons rather than hostages who had been seized and then freed through negotiation. The commissioner stressed the government's consistent policy against negotiating with terrorists or paying ransoms. This stance, he indicated, is a fundamental aspect of their strategy to combat insurgency and prevent the financing of these groups. He reiterated that the state maintains a firm position against any actions that could inadvertently strengthen the capabilities of non-state armed actors. This incident highlights the complex challenges faced by authorities in Borno State in managing the aftermath of prolonged insurgency. The region continues to grapple with the displacement of communities and the critical need for effective security operations to ensure the safety and well-being of its citizens.
