Skyroot Aerospace, a pioneering Indian company focused on space technology, has reached a valuation exceeding $1 billion following recent investment injections. This makes it the first private space technology business in India to achieve "unicorn" status, a term for startups valued over a billion dollars. The Hyderabad-based firm successfully closed a fresh funding round, accumulating $50 million. According to Yahoo Finance, this latest capital infusion was primarily led by GIC, Singapore's sovereign wealth fund. This brings the total funding secured by Skyroot Aerospace to $95 million. Previously, Skyroot Aerospace had attracted investments from other prominent international and domestic entities. These include funding from Sherpalo Ventures, a venture capital firm co-founded by Ram Shriram, an early investor in Google. BlackRock, one of the world's largest asset managers, also participated in earlier funding rounds, along with Government of Singapore Investment Corporation (GIC), and other investors. This substantial financial backing underscores growing confidence in India's burgeoning private space industry. The company is known for developing advanced rocket technology aimed at making space access more affordable and regular. Their work focuses on the design, manufacturing, and launch of space launch vehicles. Skyroot's flagship initiative involves the development of Vikram series of rockets, named in tribute to Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, widely regarded as the founder of the Indian space program. These rockets are designed to carry small satellites into orbit, catering to the increasing demand for satellite launches by various commercial and governmental clients. The attainment of unicorn status by Skyroot Aerospace highlights a significant moment for India's technological prowess and its ambition in the global space race. It signifies a maturation of the private space sector within the country, potentially paving the way for more innovation and investment in this rapidly evolving domain.
