A group comprising SoftBank-affiliated LY Corp. and Bain Capital has reportedly submitted a revised and higher offer to acquire Kakaku.com, a prominent Japanese internet company. This latest proposal is said to have solidified their position ahead of a rival bid from EQT AB, a European investment fund. The increased valuation reflects a competitive environment for control of Kakaku.com.
According to Investing.com, the updated offer from the LY Corp. and Bain Capital partnership now stands at ¥2,450 per share. This represents a considerable premium over their previous proposal of ¥2,100 per share. The revised bid values Kakaku.com at an estimated ¥350 billion, equivalent to approximately $2.23 billion.
Conversely, EQT AB, which entered the bidding process with a lower initial proposal, had subsequently raised its offer to ¥2,220 per share. However, the most recent action by the LY Corp. and Bain Capital consortium further distances their bid from EQT's, making their acquisition attempt the more financially attractive option to current shareholders.
The strategic importance of Kakaku.com, known for its price comparison services, product reviews, and restaurant listings through its Tabelog platform, appears to be driving this intensified competition. LY Corp., a subsidiary of SoftBank Group, initially made an unsolicited offer for the company in May.
This ongoing acquisition saga underscores the perceived value of digital platforms within the Japanese market. The substantial increase in the offer from the LY Corp. and Bain Capital partnership highlights their strong desire to gain control of Kakaku.com and its diverse online services. The outcome of this bidding war will likely have implications for the Japanese tech and investment landscape.
