International insurer Hiscox experienced a substantial uplift in its gross written premiums during the initial quarter of the year, registering a 10.1% rise at constant currency rates. This positive financial development was primarily fueled by a robust showing in the company's retail segment, according to Investing.com.
The retail division saw its gross written premiums climb by 6.7% to a total of $784.8 million. Within this segment, the Hiscox London Market and Hiscox Re & ILS operations also contributed to the overall growth, with premiums expanding by 8.7% and 15.6% respectively. The London Market business reached $361.2 million in premiums, while Hiscox Re & ILS achieved $383.1 million.
Despite this encouraging performance, the company noted a decrease in prior year reserve releases, which fell to $40 million from $61 million in the corresponding period of the previous year. This reduction was mainly observed in the Hiscox Retail property and casualty long-tail lines of business. Furthermore, the firm highlighted an increase in the attritional loss ratio due to adjustments made to both current and prior-year claims in its U.S. consumer and commercial property sectors.
Looking ahead, Hiscox adjusted its full-year guidance for the combined ratio for its retail segment. The revised outlook now projects a range of 92-94%, moving the previous forecast of 90-94% slightly upwards. The insurer remains optimistic about its future prospects, particularly regarding its retail business, which it expects to be a key driver of continued growth. The company's strategic focus on expanding its retail presence appears to be yielding positive results, positioning it for further market penetration and increased premium income in the coming quarters.
