Giovanni Castellucci, formerly a senior figure in the management of Italy's highway infrastructure, has been handed a twelve-year jail term. This sentence comes in connection with the catastrophic collapse of the Morandi Bridge in Genoa, an event that occurred in 2018 and resulted in the deaths of forty-three individuals.
The conviction represents a significant development after years of investigation and legal proceedings surrounding the structural failure. According to The New York Times, Mr. Castellucci was at the helm of the company responsible for overseeing the maintenance and operation of the ill-fated viaduct at the time of its destruction.
The 2018 incident saw a large section of the bridge, a vital artery for the region, give way during a severe storm. The disaster not only caused a profound loss of life but also severely disrupted transportation networks and prompted widespread questions about infrastructure safety across Italy. Prosecutors had sought a much longer sentence for the former executive, arguing for a term of fourteen years and ten months for his alleged role in the catastrophe.
Several other individuals and entities were also implicated in the extensive judicial process. In total, the court delivered sentences ranging from five to ten years for ten additional defendants, including other former employees of the company managing the bridge. However, a significant number of the fifty-nine original defendants, including two former infrastructure ministers, were acquitted of the charges leveled against them, as reported by The New York Times.
The legal proceedings have been complex and drawn-out, reflecting the intricate nature of responsibility in such a large-scale public infrastructure failure. The verdict underscores the serious legal consequences faced by those deemed responsible for neglecting public safety in critical national assets. The Morandi Bridge has since been demolished and replaced by a new structure, inaugurated in 2020.
