A Morrisons supermarket situated in Swansea, Wales, has received a substantial financial penalty following the discovery of significant hygiene deficiencies within its bakery department. The penalty, totaling £750,000, was levied after local authorities uncovered a range of issues, including an active rodent infestation and extensive deposits of grease and food debris.
The problems at the Swansea branch on Cambourne Road were initially brought to light in October 2020 by inspectors from Swansea Council. Subsequent investigations and court proceedings revealed a worrying pattern of neglect in food preparation areas. According to BBC Business, the court’s judgment emphasized that these were not isolated lapses by a few employees but rather indicative of systemic shortcomings within the store's management of hygiene standards.
During inspections, officials documented evidence of mice, along with their droppings, in locations throughout the bakery. This included areas where food was prepared and stored, posing a direct risk of contamination. Furthermore, reports detailed a considerable accumulation of grease, food residue, and general waste on various surfaces and equipment, exacerbating the unsanitary environment.
Morrisons pleaded guilty to three separate charges related to food safety breaches. The company expressed regret for the situation, acknowledging that conditions at the Swansea store had fallen below their expected operational standards. Despite the supermarket chain's vast resources and established protocols, the court found that there had been a critical failure to enforce these standards effectively at the local level.
The imposed fine of £750,000 underscores the seriousness with which food safety violations are treated, particularly when they involve widespread and persistent issues. This case serves as a reminder to large retailers of their ongoing responsibility to maintain rigorous hygiene protocols across all their branches, protecting public health and consumer confidence. The ruling also included an additional payment of over £16,000 to cover legal costs incurred by the prosecution.
